Ernesto Ramirez on Memories and Reflections

Ernesto Ramirez strikes again! His recent talk at QS San Diego called Quantified Self on a Budget is one of our most viewed videos. We were lucky enough to have Ernesto come up to San Francisco to share his thoughts on how self-tracking can enhance your memories and help you reflect on your life. He is currently using two tools: 4squareand7yearsago to tell him every morning where he checked in a year ago, and Lifelapse to take pictures every 30 seconds as he goes about his day. Ernesto has started a Visualized Self experiment, creating a History of Ernesto. It’s almost as though self-tracking is a sort of neural prosthesis enhancing our humanity. (Filmed at the Bay Area QS Show&Tell Meetup #19 at Singularity University.)

Bryan Bishop on meetlog

Bryan Bishop tracks every social interaction he has with anyone, in person, on the phone, and online – and he’s been doing this since 2005. He discovered that he talks 60% of the time, and mostly interacts with people online. Also, the more people he talks to, the more lines of code he writes! Bryan has thousands of friends, and he wanted an easier way to update all of them about his life, so he developed a way to automatically compile emails to all of his contacts based on their tags of interest. Check out his excellent, data-driven talk below. (Filmed at the Bay Area QS Show&Tell Meetup #19 at Singularity University.)

Nancy Dougherty on Mindfulness Pills

Nancy Dougherty made her own set of “mindfulness pills” – placebos labeled Focus, Willpower/Energy, Calm, and Happy. The pills were embedded with sensors that transmitted signals to her phone, recording each time she took the different pills, as well as her heart rate, activity rate, and sleep. Nancy works at Proteus Biomedical, in case you’re wondering how she made this self-experiment happen. She learned that taking an “Energy” pill actually made her bike harder to work and have a higher heart rate, and taking a “Focus” pill actually made her do more work. Watch her fun talk on managing mood and playing with the placebo effect below. (Filmed at the Bay Area QS Show&Tell Meetup #19, at Singularity University.)
