Meetups This Week

There will be eight great Quantified Self meetups happening all over the world this week. The group in Stockholm will have show&tell talks on sleep tracking, using the Scanadu Scout and using personal data to identify cause and effect in one’s life. Our exemplary QSXX Boston group will be getting together as well. To learn more on how the QSXX meetup groups create a safe space for discussing women-centric self-tracking topics, click here.

Meetups This Week

This week will bring four fascinating Quantified Self meetups. St. Louis will have a “quantified romance”-themed meetup including a toolmaker talk with the creator of a service that helps with romantic decisions.  In Ashland, they will be getting together to discuss n=1 study designs. This is the same group that started the Individual Metabolic Research Group (iMeRG) that we featured a couple of days ago.

Introducing iMeRG: The Individual Metabolic Research Group

Here at QS Labs we take great pride in supporting a worldwide network of meetup groups. From Bucharest to the Bay Area, we have over 100 groups meeting to discuss self-tracking, share experiences, and learn from each other.

We wanted to highlight a new group, based in southern Oregon, that is using self-tracking to expand and influence medical knowledge within the healthcare system. Dr. Dawn Lemanne, a board certified and practicing oncologist, has started the new Individual Metabolic Research Group (iMeRG) to develop, test, and explore inexpensive way to prevent and treat chronic diseases related to lifestyle, through rigorous N of 1 research methods.

iMeRG

Currently the iMERG is a composed of physicians and other health care professionals frustrated by the rising rates of lifestyle driven chronic disease, and the failure of the large randomized controlled trial (RCT) to provide effective interventions. Inspired by QS, they are working together to develop and use rigorous N of 1 research designs, while using themselves (not their patients) as subjects. Members propose projects, and together they figure out how to do it. QS devices and philosophies play a major role in the data collection and analysis methods being talked about at the group.  Current proposals have included:

  • How best to measure the effect of combining intermittent fasting and exercise on blood ketone levels and inflammatory markers in a sedentary postmenopausal woman
  • The clinical manifestations of Familial Mediterranean Fever gene heterozygosity.

Join the group! If you hold a license to practice a health profession (MD, DO, DDS, DMD, RN, NP, PA, DC, ND, LAc, etc.), you’re interested in N of 1 research design and methods, and you’d like to be involved, please contact Dawn. All individuals are welcome, regardless of geographic location. If you’re in the southern Oregon area you can join their meetup group on February 28th. We’ll be posting updates from the group as their research progresses.

Tidings: QS Ann Arbor Meetup Recap

Today’s post comes to us from PF Anderson, Emerging Technologies Informationist for the Health Sciences, University of Michigan and a member of the QS Ann Arbor meetup group. It first appeared on her excellent Emerging Technologies Librarian blog and we’re happy to republish it here.

Cool Toys, Devices, Quantified Self

Last week, I felt really lucky that I was able to make it to the first Quantified Self Meetup of the New Year (thanks to Nancy Gilby for the ride!). This session was held at the UMSI Entrepreneurship Center. Roughly ten people came, and I’m not sharing names even though they said I could because I’m not sure I got the names down right. The group included a wide range of types of people: corporate folk, students, entrepreneurs, faculty, alumni, and independents. The conversation was fast, dynamic, and overlapping, so I couldn’t catch everything. I will talk about what I did catch of the IDEAS and the GADGETS. That’s what’s really fun, eh?

INTERESTS

What the Meetup group page SAYS they are interested in (as a sampling) is pretty extensive.

“Aging in Place Technology • Behavior change and monitoring • Caregiving of digital patients • Chemical Body Load Counts • Citizen science• Digitizing Body Info • Medical Self-Diagnostics • Lifelogging• Location tracking • Non-invasive Probes• Mindfulness and wisdom tracking • Parenting through monitoring/ tracking • Personal Genome Sequencing • Psychological Self-Assessments • Risks/Legal Rights/Duties • Self Experimentation • Sharing Health Records • Wearable Sensemaking”

What’s even more interesting is what people said they were interested in as they went around the table.

  • aging population
  • big data
  • biohacking
  • data visualization
  • diabetes
  • epigenetics
  • fitness
  • geofencing
  • legal advice
  • patient communities
  • personal genomics
  • sleep tracking
  • telehealth

Meetups This Week

Eight wonderful QS meetup groups will be getting together this week in four different countries. Belfast and New Orleans are two new groups that will be having their very first events. Belfast is starting especially strong with a mother and son show&tell on using a new continuous glucose monitor system that doesn’t require finger prick calibration. Vienna will be playing with the meeting format by experimenting with an unconference style for their event.

Meetups This Week

There are an incredible 12 QS meetups getting together this week in seven different countries.

Both Toronto and St. Louis will discuss how to use self-tracking tools to keep New Year’s resolutions. In Indianapolis, people will talk about their recently acquired tracking devices from the holidays. Geneva will be doing a review of 2014, where attendees will mention their pick for the most interesting QS thing that occurred. Budapest will feature a couple toolmaker talks in addition to their show&tells, and Portland will be getting together for a workgroup session to make progress on their personal data projects.

QS meetups take many different forms. To see what the meetup in your area is like, check the full list of the over 100 QS meetup groups in the right sidebar. Don’t see one near you? Why not start your own!

If you organize a QS meetup, please post pictures of your event to the Meetup website. We love seeing them. Have a good week!

Meetups This Week

The spirit of reflection that accompanies a new year is still present as eight QS meetups in four countries get together this week.  Munich, in particular, will be discussing how to use QS tools to help track and reach goals for 2015.

A common resolution is to lose weight, and weight management is the focus of the event in Stockholm today. Their show&tell talks include one person who, while on parental leave, lost 6 kilos by playing games and the story of a woman who used running and self-tracking to lose half her bodyweight.

One thing that I love about collecting the upcoming meetups is seeing the different formats that local organizers are adopting to serve their community. In England, the group in Cambridge are starting the year with an exciting launch event to engage their community. In addition to the classic Show&Tell talk, they are experimenting with their format by having a talk focused on QS technology, as well as, a “researchy” talk to tap into the academia presence in their membership. In the other direction, the Dallas group are keeping things informal and casual with a chat over dinner.
